Abstract:
The aim of the research has been enriching and understanding space and temporal variability of air pollution in urban areas. This study is a short review of the urban air pollutants, methods of monitoring atmospheric pollutants and dispersion in urban area. Also, the study has a qualitative analysis of the spatio-temporal variability of the pollutants’ concentrations recorded in the street, with the steps to follow to make such an analysis. To analyze the influence of the factors which contribute at the pollutants accumulation and also at their dispersion, a description of a temporal evolution is needed, but also the spatial distribution of the concentration of the pollutants emited in the atmosphere. The pollutants monitoring devices must be placed in some points close to the street, where high concentrations are recorded and must be checked constantly with a procedure named calibration. The database must contain continuous data series on a long period of time. They are processed, compared and analysed and the results obtained are interpreted with the purpose of understanding the correlations between traffic, emisions, meteorological conditions and the pollutants’ concentrations from the street zone. The meteorologycal and topometrical conditions have an important role in the spatio-temporal variability of the urban pollution, because they influence the ventilation and, therefore, the pollutant dispersion.
