Abstract:
CdS is a semiconductor compound with high relevance for solar cells technology and related applications. With increasing efficiencies of CdS thin-film based solar cells, they are becoming potential candidates for use in space technology. Taking into account the high background of cosmic radiation where they are operating, a study of the effects of ionizing radiations on their electrical properties is very important for understanding how the efficiency of the cells is affected. We report here our results on the effects of high energy proton irradiation on the electrical properties (resistivity, mobility, charge carriers density) of CdS thin films. The samples, prepared by thermal-vacuum evaporation on glass substrates at a temperature of 270 Celsius degrees, were irradiated with 3 MeV protons, up to a fluency of 10^14 protons/cm^2. All the films exhibit n type conduction, as revealed by Hall effect measurements.
