Abstract:
A radar climatology of supercells for south-eastern Romania (Dobrogea) was developed for convective season (May-September) using data collected by WSR-98D radar installed at Medgidia. This is the first study of the temporal and spatial characteristics of supercells in Romania. Approximately 550 supercells were identified during 2003-2006. The results show the initiation of supercells is usually between 1200 UTC and 1500 UTC, with a secondary maximum between 1700–1800 UTC. The life time of the supercells observed in the study area was between 40 and 60 min. The mean direction of supercell track is from south-west and the supercell with the longest duration are those with south and south-east direction.
