Abstract:
Long exposure to sunlight and oxidative coloring can produce seriously oxidative damage of hair. During the last years, the harmful effects of oxidative stress have gained increasing interest. The hair samples were prelevated from many human subjects of different ages and belonging from different regions. In order to simulate oxidative stress, the samples were bleached, subjected to ultrasounds or UV (UVA -365 nm and UVB -312 nm ) radiation. The oxidative stress effects were quantified by spectral criteria development using different methods: UV-VIS absorption spectroscopy, reflectance spectrophotometry, electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The hair fibers of different colours are seen to have different behavior under oxidative stress conditions. The hair morphology was monitored by atomic force microscopy and optical microscopy
