Abstract:
Romania is a signatory state of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) since September 1996 and participates actively to the implementation of the Treaty with the seismic station Cheia - Muntele Rosu (AS81-MLR), included in the auxiliary seismic network of the International Monitoring System (IMS). The National Institute for Earth Physics (NIEP) hosts the Romania’s National Data Centre (N142 ROM_NDC) and operates the seismic station AS81 for its uninterrupted participation to the global monitoring network of the verification system. At ROM_NDC the data are coming from MLR station and from the IMS, as well the products of the International Data Centre (IDC) from Vienna, Austria, are received and analyzed. Between 1994 and 2002, high performance seismic equipment has been functioning at AS81station, in the framework of the cooperation with the GEOFON Network (Germany). Since 1999, an important upgrade was initiated, both at the MLR station and at the ROM_NDC, involving technical cooperation by the Government of Japan and technical assistance from the CTBT Organization (CTBTO). The new seismic monitoring system was installed at Muntele Roºu and Bucharest in October 2001. AS81-MLR seismic station is presently fully operational, recording continuous earth motion data at Muntele Rosu site and transmitting these data by request to the IDC, in Vienna and in real time to the ROM_NDC, in Bucharest. With the support of CTBTO, the new system was certificated as auxiliary stations in the IMS network.Present NIEP participation to the global seismological activities in the support of CTBT, consist of:- permanent activities: elaborating and submitting of monthly station reports on AS81-MLR operation and of monthly reviewed bulletins for Romanian events, biannual participating to the CTBT/WGB meetings;- non-permanent activities: participating to the NDC’s evaluation of system-wide performance test (SPT1) - 2004 phase and to the operation and maintenance workshops.
