Abstract:
We discuss the pairing phenomenon in infinite nuclear matter in the BCS approximation, by introducing the concept of renormalization of the pairing potential. In this way, one is able to solve the gap equation by working only in the interesting, restricted, low energy space of states, where the iterative solution`s convergence is very fast. After reviewing basic aspects of the BCS theory, we develop the renormalization procedure in the general case, and then we specialize to a separable approximation of the potential, which allows for an easy solution. Finally, we present the results for the Paris potential, and discuss the implications for astrophysical phenomena.
