Abstract:
Measuring a wide range of parameters helps bring renewable and alternative energy supplies to mainstream. As the cost of renewable and alternative energy harvesting is still relatively high compared to standard solutions, while technical development approached theoretical limits, process efficiencies can be maximized by using a sensor-controller approach to create feedback loops. Sensors come with a wide variety of interfaces: from simple variation of electrical parameters (resistivity, capacitance) to more complex electrical responses (voltametric cells) or even digital sensors (with a wide variety of synchronous and asynchronous serial interfaces) and require specific equipment for collecting data.A versatile system for collecting sensor data from a wide range of interfaces was developed starting with an ARM core for processing power and a microcontroller providing analog to digital interface, OpenTherm, voltage (0-5V) and relay output. The system is powered by a Gentoo-derived linux distribution, with Ruby providing data acquisition libraries and a web interface. Standard computer modules can be added to the system via its USB2.0 interface. The system was also developed to have a small energy footprint, using for power a small photovoltaic array and batteries.
