Abstract:
We used a narrow electron beam tube to play with electrons acted on by the Lorentz force in a strong nonhomogeneous magnetic field. The magnetic field is produced by a multi-turn circular coil (winding number 154, 0.4 m in diameter). The electrons accelerated at 300 eV and 550 eV are propagated in radial direction. The magnetic flux density produced by the coil is controled by adjusting the DC current and correspondingly measured using a Hall sensor. Despite its apparent simplicity, predicting the electron trajectories in such a geometry is surprisingly complicated, and requires precise numerical techniques. We present a numerical model and detailed experimental results about electron trajectories, with potential applications to particle detectors and accelerators.
