Abstract:
This year we celebrate 125 year of institutionalized meteorology in Romania. It is good opportunity to look backward and to appreciate the importance give to the severe weather observations over the years. With this occasion we revised the historical cases and in this paper we present the revised climatology of tornadoes and waterspouts in Romania. The climatology of tornadoes in Romania can be divided in three periods. The first period, the “historical” period, between 1984 (the foundation of Romanian Meteorological Service, RMS) and 1945 (the end of World War II) is based on the events reported in the monthly publication RMS. The historical events represent a new source of information concerning tornadic activity in Romania, and except for the 9 May 1886 tornado from Bucharest, published in the Wegener catalog [Wegener A., 1917. Wind-und Wasserhosen in Europe], all these events where completely forgotten or considered “bad observations”. The second period contains few observations for a period of 45 years between 1945 and 2002. The “modern” period started with the 12 August 2002 tornado from Facaeni and contains mainly cases reported by mass media and wittiness.
