Abstract:
Laser diodes are some of the most attractive optical coherent radiation source used in various physics fields like spectroscopy, laser cooling, Bose Einstein condensation etc. The emitted radiation wavelength is controlled easily by changing the temperature of the laser diode (coarse adjustment) or the injected current (fine adjustment). Applications requiring locking of the laser diode to an atomic reference impose very precise control of the mentioned parameters. We shall present in this paper the design of a microcontroller based PID thermo controller. Relative to the classical, analog PID, the numerical one has several advantages: much easier setting of the loop parameters (gain, integration and derivation time); very fine adjustment of the temperature, high noise immunity etc. The use of a modern microcontroller allows also a direct communication between the thermo controller and a personal computer. In this way it will be possible to record continuously the laser diode temperature. The laser diode used for preliminary tests is a 852 nm SDL module, including in the same package a laser diode, a Peltier element and a thermistor.
