Abstract: (Bi1/2Na1/2)TiO3 doped with 8 mol%BaTiO3 was prepared by an acetate-alkoxide sol-gel method. The evolution of the structure and microstructure of the precursor gel heated at temperatures up to 700 °C was studied by various techniques. The SEM analyses showed a microstructure consisting of nano-sized grains (~30 nm, at 500 °C and 50 nm at 700 °C temperature annealing). The dried gel powder was found to be amorphous, and then crystallizes on the perovskite structure of tetragonal (Bi1/2Na1/2)TiO3 at 600 °C, for 3h in air. The ceramics of composition corresponding to 0.92(Bi1/2Na1/2)TiO3-0.08BaTiO3, manufactured from the as-prepared nanostructured powder, presented good characteristics for piezoelectric applications.
