Abstract:
Exhaled breath contains approximately 200 different VOCS (volatile organic compounds) predominantly alkanes and methylated alkanes. Ethylene is considered the most specific volatile marker of free-radical induced lipid peroxidation (LP) and cell damage in the human body. The analysis of the breath ethylene was made by using the CO2 laser photoacoustic spectroscopy system (LPAS). This technique was developed at National Institute for Laser, Plasma and Radiation Physics-INFLPR, Laboratory-Optics and Lasers in Life Sciences, Environment and Manufacturing. The application of breath test and laser photoacoustic spectroscopy technique to an experimental study was performed in cooperation with Coltea Hospital from Bucharest. The ethylene in the breath exhaled from patients receiving a radiation treatment based on external X-ray beam was analysed and the results are reported in this presentation.
