Abstract:
One phenomenon that strongly affects precipitation from Europe is atmospheric blocking. In our study we investigate the relationship between the variability of precipitation recorded at six meteorological stations in southern part of Romania together with blocking frequency in the same region.Precipitation records have monthly resolution and cover the period 1961-2002. In order to characterize the variation of precipitation we have used Angot index. To investigate blocking circulation frequency we have calculated bidimensional Tibaldi-Molteni index calculated for the same period (daily G500, ERA40). High (low) blocking activity is associated to low (high) precipitation in southern part of Romania. Because blocking is a persistent circulation regime, it is related with persistent meteorological drought in southern part of Romania. Precipitation variability in the southern part of Romania is strongly influenced by blocking activity in the Atlantic-European region during winter. The result is consistent also with blocking-NAO relationship as established in previous studies.
