Abstract:
We investigate different methods of including the positive energy states at the level of mean field HF+BCS description of finite nuclei. We explore different (more or less naive) choises of continuum level densities and question their consistency with the continuum discretization procedure, in our case the box discretization. Problems that usually have been swept under the rug, e.g. by using the constant pairing strenght approximation, arise if one uses a more complex realistic two-body pairing interaction and continuum states. In this case, a correct treatment must ensure that the magnitudes of the pairing potential matrix elements and those of the level density are carefully balanced in order to yield finite pairing equations in the infinite box limit.By dealing with open systems, we also take into account the possibility of modifying the BCS equations as to properly describe the localized nuclear system, as a way of overcoming the practical and conceptual shortcomings of the previously mentioned naive methods. This work was supported by a grant of the Romanian National Authority for Scientific Research, CNCS-UEFISCDI, project number PN-II-PCE-2011-3-0092.
