Abstract:
Background: The role of light in life processes was studied long before the discovery of lasers. Microorganisms, plants, and animals were used to study how the interaction of light with the photoreceptor systems produces the photobiological phenomena. Purpose: In this study we analyzed, based on the findings in the specialized literature and of our own, the similarities and differences between the photoreception systems in plants (where we focused mainly on the extra-photosynthesis system) and animals (mainly on the extra-ocular system). Materials and methods: We analyzed the relation between light and some physiological functions on plants, including photo-periodicity, transpiration, respiration, period of the seeds rest, plant growth, circadian rhythms, phototropism, and photo-tactic movement. Some of these relations could find applications in therapeutic purposes using artificial light, including lasers. Results: Based on the similarities between the properties of the corresponding pigments, we made some conclusions about whether or not the experimental results of applying monochromatic radiation on the plants could be proper to apply on mammalians. Discussion and Conclusion: When appropriate, this transfer of results from plants to mammalians (including humans) should be of help in guiding scientists and laser therapists to improve their knowledge and methodologies, since on the plants it is easier to work than on animals.
