Abstract:
A specific program concerning snow observations started in the National Administration of Meteorology since February 2004.The monitored area covers one of the most tourist frequented mountains in Romania: Bucegi, Făgăras and Postăvaru massif. Each winter avalanches are causing not only important damages in the forests and on the roads crossing through or nearby the mountains, but also human accidents, some of them fatal. The starting mechanisms of an avalanche release are very complex, and includes not only direct influence of some meteorological aspects, but also external influences on the fragile equilibrium of internal snow layers. The winter season 2008-2009 was a good example of avalanche activity due to important snow accumulations followed by warm air invasions, but also to accidental facts (avalanches triggered by skiers).
