Abstract:
Nowadays, Optics is very well represented in the Romanian high school - level Physics curriculum. This domain is part of the curriculum for both Physics contests (National Physics Olympiads) and national exams (baccalaureate). An attractive demonstration experiment could create the basis for the new lesson, as well as arouse the students` interest. Optics experiments are often difficult to carry out in the classroom, given the environmental conditions (too much light), but even with least amount of materials a lot of enlightening experiments can be performed. This paper presents some basic experiments of Geometric Optics, such as the determination of refraction index of a liquid, light refraction through lenses, colors mixing etc., that can be achieved with simple and inexpensive materials. Students can easily perform and develop the experiments by themselves. Special attention was paid to Physical Optics (double slit experiment, diffraction grating, Newton rings etc.) where the experiments` results allowed the calculation of different parameters. Apart from giving an introduction to basic Optics, the performed experiments are expected to help students understand how the science they learn in school is used in everyday life.
