Abstract:
Cosmic rays have been discovered by Victor Hess during a series of hazardous balloon flights in 1912. After a century since their discovery, it is not known yet where they come from, how they are produced and accelerated. Huge efforts are made world-wide in order to understand them, from theoretical aspects to particle acceleration and observations. Extensive arrays have been developed and equipped so far with different detection techniques in adequate media like air, water, ice, or salt, in order to observe the avalanche of cosmic ray induced showers. While the ultra high energies of cosmic particles cannot be reached at the world largest and most powerful human-made particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collier at CERN, the Universe is being explored through its cosmic messengers. The field of high energy and astro-particle physics is highly developing, presently. Many scientific experts are involved in understanding the messengers of the Universe, while young people are educated internationally. A perspective and status update on cosmic ray observations after 100 years since were first discovered will be presented.
