Abstract:
The avalanche from Balea Valley - 08 march, 2008 – is a typicall example of accidental avalanches caused by skiers or surfers, and not by the meteorological conditions. One victim was caugt by the avalanche and burried under 2m of snow, and found 2 hours later alive! The estimated avalanche risk was considerable (3 - on the european avalanche hazard scale) – considering that the snowpack was weakly bonded in most steep slopes and triggering possible even with low additional loads. The study examines the synoptic conditions before and during the day of march 08, together with the evaluation of all meteorological and snow parameters that favourized the instability of the snow layer in Fagaras Mountains.
