Abstract:
The observation of the electron cyclotron resonance in a Penning trap is reported. This phenomenon is related to the motion of the electrons in the cross RF electric and magnetic fields. The electron source consists of two thin metallic tapes heated by a current of several amps. The Penning trap electrodes was used both to form the electron beam and to apply the RF field. The magnetic field has been generated by an external pair of Helmholtz coils. A marginal oscillator operating at a frequency around of 18 MHz has been used both to generate a small RF field and to detect the RF absorption. The magnitude of the effect as a function of the heat current and electron beam current, respectively, has been investigated. The results are discussed.
