Abstract:
Concerning the excitation conditions, the second positive system appears readily in most sources, notably in ordinary discharges, through pure nitrogen and air; the first negative system of N2+ is observed in the negative column of discharge through nitrogen, but is also readily produced in various sources such Tesla and ordinary transformer excited discharge through helium containing traces of nitrogen or pure nitrogen at low pressure, in discharges produced by microwaves and in hollow cathode tubes. On the purposes to study in the optimal conditions the vibrational spectra belonging to the N2 second positive system [C 3ƒÀu ¡V B 3ƒÀg ]v and N2+ first negative system [B 2ƒÃu+ ¡V X 2ƒÃg+] we have used a cylindrical HCE electrical discharge, because in a such source we can get many groups of electrons with energy placed in the range 1-100 eV. The used HCE electric discharges were operated in pure nitrogen or in the mixture of nitrogen plus helium, under the total pressure ranged between 0.1 and few tens Torr, electric voltage from 150 V up to 1500 V (for segmented cathode geometry) and current density from a few mA per cm2 up to few A per cm2 . Some considerations about the electron temperature in the HCE plasma are made too.
