Abstract:
Based on a recent definition of entropy in classical optics, and on the applications of this concept in the phenomena of light propagation, reflection and refraction, the paper aims to demonstrate the relation between the interference pattern obtained through the superposition of two coherent light beams and the extrema of entropy. Moreover, the relation between the extrema of the entropy and those of light intensity on one hand, and the extrema of the Wigner distribution function of the other hand is evidenced. Both the longitudinal and the transverse variation of entropy, light intensity and the Wigner distribution function are studied. Although numerical simulations/comparison can be performed for any light distribution, the analytical results obtained when the two interfering beams have a Gaussian amplitude distribution offer a better understanding of the relationship between the extrema of the three functions mentioned above. The results of this paper provide a new interpretation of light interference, which can be extended to cases when interference is obtained due to the superposition of the wavefunctions of quantum particles.
