Abstract:
Assessing the severe weather situations with respect to the hail events implies to establish correlations between the occurrence frequencies of the cumulonimbus clouds and the hail events. The aim of this paper is to analyse the occurrence frequency of the hail phenomenon within the Wallachian area Romania. To this end, observation data were used over the 1961-2007 period. The occurrence frequency of the hail events was determined for 20 weather stations in Wallachia. For the 1994-1999 period, the frequency of the hail events was compared to the occurrence frequency of the cumulonimbus clouds, as detected with the weather radar. As a rule, a higher occurrence frequency of Cb clouds and hail was noticed in the northern and north-western part of Wallachia, and a smaller occurrence frequency in its eastern and south-eastern part. The annual variability showed a smaller occurrence frequency of the hail phenomenon in January and December and a higher one in June and July. An expected conclusion is that the occurrence frequency of both cumulonimbus clouds and hail is higer in the hill and mountain areas.
