Abstract: The apparent matter -antimatter asymmetry in the universe, the practical absence of the antimatter in the near vicinity of our galaxy, continuesto be a major cosmological puzzle awaiting its resolution.
The AMS (Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer) collaboration is an experiment
performed with the purpose of obtaining a large amount of data on the
Cosmic Rays when mounted on the International Space Station (ISSA)
The program includes, as one of the main objectives, the test of the
existence of the primary antimatter in cosmic rays in order to improve
by several orders of magnitudes our knowledge about the problem
To prove the feasibility of the experiment, to gain experience and to
test the main technical aspects in real space flight conditions ,a
simplified configuration was flown for 10 days in June 1998 under the
name AMS 01 on the Discovery STS-91 flight.
It was also intended to obtain the first data in order to understand the
performance of the detector and the expected background.
The effort done and the results obtained with the AMS 01 flight will be
shortly presented.
