Abstract:
There is increasing evidence that earthquakes are clustered in time, space and size. Clustering properties can be related by all means to the physics of the seismogenic process and the rheology of the material in the focal volume. Consequently, we assume that the identification of clustering signs in the time series of the Vrancea earthquakes provides potential hints about how the seismic process develops and how it is controlled by rheological properties and physical parameters of the material at the focal depth (fluid percolation, diffusive process of stress, non-linear dynamics, phase transitions, etc). On the basis of an extended earthquake catalog covering the time interval from January 1974 to March 2001 (5435 events), we applied a multiple statistical procedure to identify scale-invariant clustering of the Vrancea earthquakes time distribution against a random, Poissonian process and to outline potential predictive anomalies.
