Abstract:
The solar granulation is visible as a cellular pattern of bright elements (the granules) surrounded by darker intergranular lanes. The mean cell size, defined as the average distance between centers of adjacent granules (intergranular distances), was introduced as convenient quantitative parameter for characterizing the scale of the granulation pattern. However this concept is questionable for it smoothes the actual distribution of cell sizes. We analyzed several methods to quantify the granules pattern and obtain valuable results for describing accurately the patterns.
