Abstract: A platform consisting of a personal computer with a National Instruments acquisition card and a pendulum apparatus was used during the laboratory classes associated to the Advanced Electronics course to build an experimental set-up allowing various experiments to be performed from system identification to control system implementation. Since the moment of inertia and restoring torque of the pendulum can be independently adjusted, both the free oscillation frequency and damping can be modified.
As a cheap position sensor the students mounted a potentiometer while the pendulum actuation is performed by two portable cooling fans acting in opposite directions. Simple interface electronic circuits were designed and built on the breadboard and Labview VIs were realized to acquire the pendulum position and drive the motors. Alternatively, the students can use the provided GUI, which is more elaborate and intuitive.
Besides getting familiar with various practical aspects of acquisition and control, the students reach a better understanding of the key concepts as impulse response, frequency response, transients, feedback, system stability and perturbation effects on the control systems.
