The Structural Transformation of Layered Polyaniline - Polypyrrole Films by Thermal Treatment

Abstract:
The process of plasma polymerization of organic compounds, which is carried out under a vacuum, is quite different from conventional process of polymerization. In the plasma polymerization process, ultra-thin polymer films are produced in a dry state. The process can be obtained rapidly at room temperature and can be used to deposit thin polymer films a wide variety of substrates. Advanced polymeric materials can display a wide variety of properties and applications that are not easily obtained by conventional methods. Potential applications of plasma deposition of polymer films include telecommunication devices, optical wave-guides, photorefractive materials, low dielectric materials, nanostructure materials, nonlinear optics, light mitting polymers, and semiconductor devices. In this context our study is focused on multilayer structures consisting of polyaniline (PAni) and polypyrrole (PPy) thin films in a DC - plasma jet reactor. The special reactor design confers simultaneous or sequential layer deposition. The polymer films were deposited on quartz and Si substrates. The structural transformation has been studied to a better understanding of the interface interaction at nanoscale level. The thermal treatment realized in controlled atmosphere up 700 K shows a strange behavior of these layered structures working as optical band filter (measured by UV-Viz and FT-IR spectroscopy).
