Abstract:
Because of its various applications, e.g. in material processing (surface modification), the reflex discharge plasma is a topic of active research. The aim of this work is to emphasize the electric and magnetic field structure in a reflex discharge and to study the dynamics of charged particles in such a configuration. Numerical simulations have been performed in order to obtain the field distribution and test-particle trajectories. The simulation setup includes two plane-parallel circular cathodes and a ring anode. The equipotential cathodes are placed symmetrically relative to the grounded anode. The magnetic field, created using a Helmholtz-Gauguin system is considered to be uniform everywhere in the simulation domain and normal to cathodes. An adaptive Simpson quadrature method has been used to compute the electric field. For the numerical integration of test-particle orbits we used a fifth-order Cash-Karp Runge-Kutta method, with adaptive stepsize. We obtained in this way the 3D “images” of the field geometry, as well as the trajectories of the injected test-particles.
