Abstract:
In the contribution the subject of the dark matter in the universe is reviewed, with a particular interest for the WIMPs (weakly interacting massive particles) component. A comparative analysis of different existent experiments as well as the future projects using noble gas technology is done. Noble gases combine several properties that make them very attractive as detection media: high ionization yield, good scintillation characteristics, transparency to their own emitted light. New concepts are discussed and the results of the modelling of transient phenomena that appear in the detector medium, including phase transitions, are presented. Possible indications of a dark matter signal exist, but aspects of the discrimination from other sources for events as well as the nature of the background are still elements of confusion. For these very rare interactions, the building of a background free detector is crucial. A systematic analysis of the background sources is done including possible contributions from coherent scattering of neutrinos or antineutrinos on nuclei.
