Abstract:
The statistical analysis of long-term instrumental and proxy data reveals a distinction between quasi-decadal mode of variability linked to atmosphere-ocean interactions and a mode connected to the sunspot solar cycle. We find the first mode to be the major contributor to the variability in the North Atlantic sea surface temperature field, while the solar cycle plays a more important role in the sea level pressure field and at upper atmospheric level variations. Furthermore, we show that the two different signatures can be detected in a high resolution sediment core located in the Cariaco basin. Thus, the study puts into evidence the distinction between two modes of variability and is important for the understanding of past and present climate variability.
