Abstract:
The main characteristic of shape memory alloys is that they can return to their original shape after a deformation. The deformation can be reversed by heating the alloy above a specific temperature. This behavior is known as the shape memory effect and is caused by a martensitic transformation under well defined condition. The martensitic transformation can occur thermally, by cooling the material under a specific temperature, or mechanically, by applying a stress to the material.
