Abstract:
The features of the electronic tunneling through an array of coupled quantum dots are described in a pure quantum-mechanical approach which goes beyond the ‘orthodox’ theory and is able to account for the size-effect in quantum dots. A tight binding model is used, the parameters of the problem being the following: the interdot coupling, the strength of the electron-electron interaction, the lead-dot coupling and the intensity of the magnetic field. The charge distribution in the dot system is calculated self-consistently and the electronic transmittance of an array containinig any number of identical dots is presented. The multiple splitting of the transmitance peaks and its dependence on the interdot coupling are pointed out. It is shown that in the case of ‘detuned’ dots the dual Hofstadter spectrum is responsible for the specific behaviour of this system.
