Abstract:
Objective: In this work we show how some factors like polarization, scattering, optical activity (chirality), light history effect, wavelength, pathway size, etc. influence the information distribution, carried by light, inside the living tissues. We analyze the relation dose-effect-quantum efficiency, on the basis of similarities between photonic and biologic photoreceptors. Methods: Taking into account both chirality and light, the therapy is sensitive to the space configuration (isomers) of proteins from the cells, as well as both of them suppose the same physical factor – light. We tried to see whether the efficiency of laser therapy is or not related to the optical activity of the tissue, implying the direction of light polarization into a specified point of space, for a specified point time. Results: Based on the analogy between photomedicine and optical communication, we are proposing: a) to answer to the question of the best colour in a specified application; b) to launch a hypothesis regarding the pigment evolution into a living photoreception system. The extraretinal photoreception systems in mammalians generally have absorption lying at the edges of the retinal photoreception absorption band, indicating the possible existence of separated able to work independently. Conclusion: The nature strategy in transmitting information by light can lead to application in the phototherapeutic field, optical communication, devices for vision, and other human applications. The evolution of photoreception systems in the living world must be analyzed in correlation with environmental factors, like the Sun temperature, atmospheric conditions and other.
