Abstract: Primary cosmic rays entering the Earth’s atmosphere, initiate by multiple production of secondary particles Extensive Air Showers (EAS). Mini-arrays of detectors making use of the Linsley effect measure the spread of the arrival times in particle samples and make possible to estimate the distance to the shower axis. The energy of the primary cosmic ray, the shower size and the local particle density can be also estimated. Different experiments worldwide employing mini-arrays of detectors to study the cosmic-ray air showers and their results are reviewed. The number and the type of the detectors and the auxiliary devices, as well as the geometry of the clusters are discussed. The potential of the mini-arrays is appraised for their use in coincidence with the electromagnetic calorimeter WILLI at NIPNE-HH Bucharest. WILLI is able to discriminate the different contributions of positive and negative muons as secondary radiation from EAS and the mini-arrays could determine the muon charge ratio as well. Different options for the time calibration of the two detection systems will be presented. A good correlation between the data delivered by WILLI and those collected by a future mini-array is expected, after performing detailed simulations studies of particle interactions and detector responses with the help of CORSIKA and GEANT4 software programs.
