Abstract:
The purpose of the experiment is the study of electro-optical properties of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric smectic liquid crystals. The method of analysis is the polarization of the transmitted light by a FDP (four-detector photopolarimeter), that allows the simultaneous measurement of the Stokes parameters. The material used is W129, an orthoconic smectic liquid crystal which presents both ferroelectric and antiferroelectric smectic C phases (X (13/15) SmCa* (102,3) SmA* (117/125.2) I – temperatures in Celsius degrees obtained from DSC measurements). As Stokes parameters contain the information on the electro-optical behaviour of the considered material, the apparent tilt angle can be evaluated.
