Abstract:
Elastic waves propagation in deformed SWCNTs were investigated by using molecular dynamics approach. Continuous and time limited deformations were applied to a (5,5) carbon nanotube at one end, the other one being fixed. Stretched nanotubes behave as non-homogeneous elastic media due to the non-linear stress dependency versus localstrain when the cross section area decreases due to the plastic flow. Quasi-stationary waves were found along the tube at different time intervals. The patterns indicate that soon after deformation startup, the highest elastic energy is distributed close to both ends of the nanotube. The behaviour of the SWCNT model of 2200 atoms deformed by stretching it from one end at different speeds has been investigated starting from its equillibrium state up to nanotube failure.
