Abstract:
Although the year 1951 was the first time when positron particle was used for the localization of a brain tumor, the concept of modern Positron Emission Tomography (PET), as an imagistic technique, was advanced only in the summer of 1973. After five years, in 1978, the first commercial tomograph was available. In this paper the method, the areas of application and the main physical performances of PET are presented and commented. The advantages of this technique, as compared to other imagistic techniques, such as MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) are also discussed.
