Abstract: In the last years extensive research has been developed to find new materials, combining properties of very different starting materials, leading to composite materials, with promising optical, electrical, mechanical and catalytic applications. A special interest has been paid to the field of nanometer-sized semiconductor compound crystalline clusters in different matrix (inorganic or organic) due to their special physical and chemical properties intermediate between the molecular and bulk limits.
We present a study concerning a method of preparation of thin films containing II-VI semiconductor compound inclusions in a matrix based on a polymeric material, as bisphenol A polycarbonate. To obtain the thin film samples of CdS particles embedded in a transparent solid media we followed three steps: preparation of the so-called "mother solution", film deposition and thermal treatment.
"Mother solution", contains cadmium and sulphur precursors solutions, respectively cadmium acetate and ammonium thiocyanate, added to bisphenol A polycarbonate solution. This solution turned pale yellow with the formation of CdS particles. The thin films were prepared by dipping microscope glass slides into this solution. Then the samples were dried and annealed at elevated temperature to complete the reaction between cadmium and sulphur.
The polycarbonate films doped with CdS were characterized by UV-VIS absorption spectra. We have investigated the influence of the parameters characterizing the drying process: temperature (40 oC and 60 oC), time (1,5 h and 3 h) and configuration (vertical and horizontal) on the properties of the thin films.
The thermal treatment of these samples took place at different temperatures (90 oC and 150 oC) and for different time periods (0,5h; 1 h; 1,5 h), and the effects of these parameters on the CdS clusters generation process and film quality and homogeneity were also analyzed by optical methods.
