Abstract:
Historical seismograms contain valuable information for the study of past earthquakes. A proper digitization of the analog records is required in order to apply modern techniques of seismic data processing. The digitization procedure usually involves the extraction of the sample sequence directly from the image and successively, a correction mapping from the (x,y) image coordinates to the amplitude and time samples is necessary. In 1902 Hepites installed two Bosch seismometers that entered in the history of modern seismology with the recording of November 1st, 1929 intermediate depth Vrancea earthquake. This event was one of the five earthquakes that seismologist H. Jeffreys used to prove the existence of intermediate depth earthquakes. We collected all the available paper seismograms (recorded in Bucharest) for the time interval between 1903 and 1940. These data were included in a data base together with information about instrument characteristics and event bulletins. For the first time in Romania, the analogue records will be processed using a recent technique: high-resolution scanning, digitization, traces vectorization, image-vector transformation. The images will be obtained using COLORTRAC SMARTLF CX40 scanner (resolution of 1016 dpi) and for processing we shall use the Teseo2 software developed during the EuroSeismos Project. Thus, we have the possibility to reevaluate the parameters for historical events using modern procedures. This information is unique and essential for the seismic hazard assessment. Since this study is part of an international Project (NERIES – EU-FP6 “Network research Infrastructure for European Seismology), offers the possibility to multiple exchange of historical information among different participant countries.
