Abstract:
Using satellite images associated with high resolution visible channel (HRV) and RGB-18 channels combination, in most severe weather cases we have observed the formation of cloudy tubular structures indicating a particular behavior of supercell inflow in the boundary layer. From the evolution of these tubular structures it was observed that they contain vorticity of the same sign and are grouped in pairs. Thus the transfer of warm and humid air from the boundary layer inside supercells updrafts is done not by an air current with a continuous cross section whose diameter had continuous values, but by at least two currents with equal and constant cross-section. In all the cases we have researched, the cross section associated with the current tubes has a constant value. This behavior, associated with boundary layer, is not only a characteristic associated with supercells, but with any dynamic forcing such as the gust front or a convergence line. The analysis performed herein indicates a particular dynamics behavior within the planetary boundary layer, behavior that manifest itself when a mass and momentum transfer between the boundary layer and the free atmosphere are present.
