Abstract:
Retrieval of atmospheric temperature profiles from TOVS/ATOVS satellite data and their use in NWP models is discussed. Experimentally, temperature profiles were obtained from locally received ATOVS satellite data and compared with the available radiosonde upper air observations from the national network. The accuracy of the satellite retrieved temperatures shows that their use in the form of radiosonde like profiles is less useful than, for example, the direct assimilation of the derived radiances into the analyses. Other more recent satellite sensors and methods of obtaining atmospheric profiles are shortly introduced.
