Abstract:
The Focsani depression, located in front of the SE-Carpathians arc (in Vrancea) is the deepest sedimentary basin all along the Carpathians chain. The sedimentary formations reach here a maximum depth of about 15 km.The study of macroseismic data distribution and ground motion pattern due to Vrancea large and moderate earthquakes (Mandrescu, 1999; Bonjer et al., 2001) shows systematic amplifications of the motion in two spots located at the NE extremity (Focsani area) and SW extremity (Ploiesti area) of the sedimentary basin. They could be tentatively explained as focussing effects of this local structure. The goal of this presentation is to analyze the influence of the Focsani depression on the seismic motion in case of Vrancea subcrustal earthquakes and the consequences on the seismic hazard assessment. To this aim, we analyze the data coming from the temporary CALIXTO network installed during 1999 within the tomography experiment of the Collaborative Research Center programme between the University of Karlsruhe and National Institute for Earth Physics of Bucharest.
