Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to determine the potential impact of large-scale circulation on extreme events, like droughts or floods. The study was made for an area around the meteorological and hydrological station (Calarasi station) during 1961-2012. In order to achieve this objective the precipitation amounts, using Angot Index, were analyzed. The Angot Index less than 1 indicates dry periods and the Angot Index exceeds 1 indicates rainy periods. The analysis of connections between air circulation patterns and Angot index over mentioned area was made using objective methods. For air circulation patterns two catalogs from COST733Action were used: GWT (Gross Wetter - Typen) and WLK (Wetter Lagen Klassifikation). These classification methods used are automated and are based on certain thresholds imposed parameters. We used monthly catalogues to correlate the circulation type with the Angot index. Regarding the large scale circulation, the preliminary studies indicate that the North-Eastern anticyclonic circulation in the study area is responsible for the drought occurrence.
