Abstract: An investigation has been made in order to evaluate the effect of wavelength in the laser cleaning of paper.
It was based on a synthesis of the important studies and investigations that have been made so far.
Tests have been carried out using the fundamental (1064 nm), second harmonic (532 nm), third harmonic (355 nm) and fourth harmonic (266 nm) from a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser.
The experiments were made on six types of paper (plain paper, drawing paper, glazed paper, cardboard, glazed cardboard, thick paper) artificially soiled with charcoal, and a type of red paper coloured with white and blue crayon.
According to the process of selective vaporization, the laser parameters were optimized so that any deteriorations that may affect the paper substrates were minimized.
The cleaned surfaces were examined by optical microscopy using an x-y optical microscope.
