Abstract:
A multilateral study regarding the presumed XIXth century old icon "Virgin Mary from Rohia", better known as "Grieving Mother" is presented and discussed. The icon, painted on wooden panel in a manner close to XIXth century, presented significant signs of degradation regarding both paint layers (about 20% lost and the rest full of cracks) and panel. To realize an almost complete characterization of this icon, more complementary physicochemical methods of investigation such as optical microscopy, X-ray radiography, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy as well as dendrochronological dating were used. The painting was very damaged; almost 20% of the paint layer was lost and the rest was cracked and separated from the wood panel. The wood panel was in a better condition than the paint layer. In this regard, digital radiography revealed some hidden details of the image such as a writing in a upper right corner or the presence of different inorganic pigments.A detailed denrochronological investigation allowed to reconstruct the pattern of annual rings and thus to establish the age of the wooden panel, which corroborated with other details regarding painting style, could be used to determine the icon age.
