Abstract:
When large photon momentum transfer are involved the most important contribution on the whole atom to the cross section of the scattering process is given by inner electrons. Taking into account retardation, multipoli and relativistic kinematics effects we get analytical formulae for Compton, Rayleigh and photoeffect cross sections which give at high accuracy the contributions due to the 1s and 2s bound electrons. Comparison with numerical full relativistic results shows that in the high energy regime the four 1s and 2s electrons contribute at least 80% to the angular distribution of Rayleigh scattering as well as to the total photoeffect cross section of the whole atom. The screening effects are considered via an effective charge depending on the photon momentum transfer.
