Abstract: Among the fuel cells, Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell is, by far, the most promising and the most researched. A Nafion 117 acidic membrane, Pt/C XC 72 and carbon paper + nanocarbons are the standard materials for constructing a PEMFC. This paper evaluates the characteristics of an alumina template for gas diffusion layer application in PEMFC. The alumina templates were fabricated from 99,9% pure aluminum foil, by electrochemical means; after synthesis, the templates were washed with piranha solution to remove the impurities and were functionalized with Pt particles. Electrochemical measurements, SEM microscopy and optical microscopy indicated the formation of aligned nanopores, which suggested a high surface area for the template; Pt4+ ions were reduced, inside those pores, by hydrazine, to Pt nanoparticles, the cyclic voltammetry measurements indicating an isolating electrical behavior.
