Abstract:
The aim of this study is to establish whether and to what extent there is a relationship between urban heat island (UHI) of a large Romanian city and its wind and precipitation regimes. A ten years datasets from 2000 to 2010 have been analyzed. Daily data of temperature, wind and precipitation amount from three weather stations: Băneasa, Filaret and Afumaţi were used in order to establish the intensity of urban heat island and the synoptic regimes that influences its magnitude, and to investigate the correlations between urban heat island and wind and precipitation values. The results emphasize that the mean value of Bucharest’s UHI is 2.19 Celsius degree, with seasonal significant differences (1.66 Celsius degree during wintertime and 2.61 Celsius degree in the summertime). Most of the highest values of UHI were identified under calm atmospheric conditions, with light winds (mean wind of 0 to 3 m/s). Regarding the association between urban heat island intensity and precipitation regimes, it has been observed that the intense UHI occurred under completely dry synoptic situations.
