Abstract:
Among A2B6 compounds, cadmium sulfide (CdS) is one of the best candidates for the manufacturing of electronic and optoelectronic devices, especially solar cells. In this work the effects of irradiation with high-energy protons on structural and optical properties of CdS thin films have been investigated. The films were prepared by thermal-vacuum evaporation on glass substrate at a temperature of 270 Celsius degrees. The samples were irradiated with 3 MeV protons, up to a fluency of 10^14 protons/cm^2. Structural analysis of the samples by X-ray diffraction revealed that the films consist of a hexagonal-close-packed wurtzite type phase(001) preferentially oriented in the growth direction. Near band-gap optical absorption spectra were measured both before and after irradiation. The observed changes are discussed in connection with the structural and morphological (as revealed by SEM) modifications, induced by proton irradiation.
